Prickly DUNDAGA: What to Do?

Dundaga is a village in the northwestern part of Latvia. The name of the yarn comes from this place.

Dundaga Yarn - 100% sheep wool, with no additives. This unique yarn is made to preserve all the beneficial properties of natural fibers. All yarn is dyed only with natural dyes, and the wool is not bleached.

When purchasing this yarn, be prepared to encounter twigs, prickles, and coarse wool (stiff, rough hair). How can you make the finished product soft and comfortable to wear?

The answer is simple - multiple washes. You need to wash and rinse the item thoroughly. I start by washing the yarn in skeins: since the yarn has undergone minimal processing, it means it’s dirty. I rinse it about 15 times, shaking it to let the prickles come out. Then, when rewinding, I pick out the “straws.” While knitting, I choose the remaining “prickles.” It’s all about repeated washing and sorting. The finished item needs to be washed again; this is true handmade work! It may take from 3 to 10 washes, and the water will be very dirty, usually releasing one color at a time. Don’t worry, the colors won’t bleed into each other. After washing, you can “nourish” the item with hair conditioner. But the result! Such items can be worn even by those with very sensitive skin, tested and confirmed!

I hope this little advice helps you decide on using Dundaga! Wishing you soft and cozy sweaters!

It is even possible to wash in hot water with dish soap. This sounds harsh, but as long as you don't agitate the wool too much with your hands and most important: don't rinse in colder water (!), you get very nice floofy results. Felting only happens from temperature shock from warm to cold water. The wool will bloom, but not felt.
